In this course, we will explore atmospheric firings, including saggar, raku, and specific surface techniques, utilizing terra sigillata. Saggar is a firing process in which ceramic work is fired in a container (such as aluminum foil or a ceramic vessel) with raw materials and combustible materials. When fired, these materials create unique and delicate effects on the surface of the work. Students will also learn about ways to prep their surfaces for specific firings using terra sigillata, an ultra-refined slip that, when polished, creates a gentle sheen on the work. Due to the nature of the techniques covered in this class, all work created is intended only for decorative purposes. Students will learn how to develop saggars using slabs, slip, and aluminum foil. During the class, there will be three total firings: two saggar and one raku.
Fee: $285.00
