This introduction workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn the basic process of beginner small-scale casting. The workshop will begin with using simple household items such as water, straw to pour molten metal into! The second part of the class will focus on cuttlebone and Delft or sand casting. Delft clay is a reusable molding material that provides quick results and helps to retain intricate details. Feel free to bring in a variety of small items such as plastic toys, keys, and buttons you may want to try to delft cast! Preferably nothing over 3 inches in size. While the metals studio is equipped with exhaust vents, please note that during this workshop, we will be using organic materials that smell as a by-product during the casting process.
With the fluctuation of precious metal costs, the materials fee for this class does NOT include sterling silver casting grain.
What to bring to this class:
- Students should pre-purchase their own sterling prior to class. Suggested amount is 2-3 ounces of new casting grain https://www.riogrande.com/product/.925-sterling-silver-casting-grain/100800GP/?code=100800
- Notebooks and writing utensils for note taking
- Proper Dress Code: close toed shoes, long pants, (optional) work aprons
- Students can also bring in any scrap (unsoldered) sterling silver as well.
- Small items such as plastic toys, keys, and buttons you may want to try to delft cast! Preferably nothing over 3 inches in size.
A minimum of taking the Intro to Metals 1 or Dept permission is required.
