Beginning with basic techniques, students will build familiarity with the watercolor medium before diving into various projects that aim to stretch their knowledge of the medium and different disciplines of art making. The class will explore still lifes, portraiture, landscapes and abstraction, each with additional prompts or constraints to inspire creative thinking and visual problem solving. Students will be encouraged to explore materials in addition to watercolor that enhance the final piece but the paintings should be primarily watercolor based.

Materials List:
-Quality Watercolor Paper. Arches(best), Canson and Strathmore 400 are all good brands. 140lb or higher, cotton rag. Cold press recommended. For the first day I recommend 2 full (22x30”) watercolor sheets and a mixed media sketchbook. Watercolor pads are great but only for one piece at a time, for this class I recommend loose sheets or a bound pad that you can flip through.
-Watercolor paints. At least the primary colors, a cool grey and a warm brown. Windsor and Newton and Holbein are best quality, Cotman are W&N’s more affordable range. Watercolor sets can be fine but tubes of color are more versatile and often better quality.
-Small (6 or 8 Round), Medium (16 or 20 Round), and Large (1”-1 ½” Flat or Filbert) watercolor brushes. I recommend Blick’s Master Synthetic collection.
-Watercolor pallet with small wells (for pigment) and larger flat areas (for mixing). masking fluid
-2H or 4H pencil, or colored pencils for under drawing
-1 or 2 large clear/white water container (milk gallon etc)
-small set (half dozen+) of clear/white water containers (6oz, yogurt cups etc)
-additional/recommended: hairdryer, paper towels, painters tape
