In this workshop students will be exploring the surface decoration technique of Maiolica. This historic technique is known for color and pattern that bring the surface alive! During week I, with the instructor's guidance, students will create a wall hanging of their choice out of low fire clay: animal mask, sconce, or plaque. During week II, once bisque fired, the decorative Maiolica Glaze shall be applied to your pieces, using mason stain washes that bring intensity and saturation of color not available to the high-fire pallet. Students will decide on a pattern or motif, overlaying it on top of the glaze using these specialized stain mixtures. Participants will also learn how to apply a wax resist to create a wash of color in the background of their chosen pattern.

Clay and materials will be provided, students should provide basic clayworking tools and brushes.

Meeting: Sunday May 11 and June 15, 2 to 5 pm (weeks off allow for completion, drying and firing)

Fee: $150.00
