Intermediate Level - Wood Firing Workshop

This intermediate level workshop is for students who want to work independently producing ware for a group wood firing on Saturday October 12th. The firing, including preparation, loading, firing and post firing clean up and review, will be led by Lori Mader, who brings her atmospheric firing knowledge to Worcester through her practice of producing wood fired pottery at Cedar Swamp Pottery, Wilbraham, MA. Students should make work in another class, via Open Studio (separate registration) or independently. All students must attend each session as outlined below and will participate in the day long firing by taking a shift at the kiln. Students should bring a base understanding of surface and form development for wood firing.

By registering for this workshop; students agree to fully participate in their share of labor associated with this type of firing. If you have questions, please see the department head.

  • I hand make my work from porcelain and stoneware clay. They are fired in a wood burning kiln in 14 to 18 hour firings. The glazes used are modern adaptations of ancient Asian recipes of celadon, shino, and tenmoku iron glazes, safe for use with food and beverages. It is a quietly contemplative, multi-stage process inspired by history, hard work, and the beauty of nature.
