In this class, students will explore clay as a sculptural medium — no wheel, no limits, and no need to be
functional. Learn the three foundational handbuilding techniques — solid, coil, and slab construction —
and discover how to use them to bring your own concepts to life.
We’ll begin with a guided hands-on project to build technical confidence, then shift toward developing
individual sculptures with personalized support throughout the process. Along the way, we’ll discuss
surface, texture, form, and alternative finishing methods, including cold finishes for those who want to
step beyond traditional glazing. Students are also encouraged to work larger within the confines of the
kiln or in smaller multiples.
The course also includes a one-day sculpting demonstration of the human head, offering insight into
proportion, structure, and gesture — valuable skills for any sculptor, whether or not you’re drawn to
figurative work.
This class is all about experimentation, storytelling, and exploring clay’s expressive potential beyond
function.
