This course will focus on an array of projects, from functional pottery to sculptural forms, as we introduce you to a range of clay-working techniques. Learn traditional forming techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab construction on a more intermediate level. If you are more experienced, you can pursue your own independent project with guidance from the instructor. Critical dialogue with the instructor and the group, through supportive critique methods, will be encouraged. This class is for intermediate to advance level students, with well-established clay working skills.

Notes:

Materials and firing fees are in addition to tuition. A Note to First Time Students: Welcome to the Introduction to Handbuilding! Please wear clothes you don't mind getting a little muddy…clay will wash off, but some clays tend to stain light colored fabrics. - Bring and apron or a smock if you want. - Please do not wear open toed shoes. - Please read and follow all studio procedures given to you during the first class. - Clay, glaze and firing cost are included in the price of 25lbs of clay and will cost ~$50.00 for 25 lbs. This may be paid in cash or by check, bags of clay may be shared. - If you have any old hand towels, bring a couple for drying your hands, as this will help us all be a little greener and not use paper towels. - Have FUN! Thanks and enjoy the class.

Sophie Lever

Sophie Lever is a ceramic artist who creates both functional and sculptural work. Growing up, she moved around a lot, and spent time in many different states on the east coast and midwest. This (along with other factors) created a desire for order and structure in the work that she makes. Fascinated with pattern, geometry, and organization, both her functional and sculptural work contain these elements, whether that be through surface decoration or form.

While her functional work is wheel-thrown, most of her sculptural work is built with hard slabs. She is interested in paradoxes and contradictions in her sense of self and how these ideas can visually play out in a single work. Sophie is currently an artist in residence at Access Arts in Columbia, MO where she teaches adult and youth classes and works to maintain a functioning studio. Prior to Access Arts, she was a resident artist at Brockway Center for Arts and Technology in Brockway, PA. Over the past two years, her work has been exhibited in juried shows across the country, including 64Arts, Atlanta Print Biennial, and In Hand II. She received her BA in Studio Arts from the University of Rochester in 2023. For two summers, she was an apprentice at Bella Joy Pottery in Plainwell, MI.
