Course Description

Steel is one of the most readily available metals available in the world, often found as scrap or trash in our day to day lives. However, with some modified jewelry techniques, it can be made into stunning fine jewelry. Its strength, high melting temperature, and eye-catching appearance can make for sturdy pieces that stand out in a world more used to silver and gold adornment. What's more, steel can easily be merged with more traditional precious metals for some stunning contrast. This class will cover Soldering, forming, and light forging of steel with demonstrations of fusing precious metal into textured steel surfaces, as well as finishing, patinas, and care techniques for steel jewelry.

Prior jewelry fabrication and soldering experience recommended.

Students should bring:
Any interesting bits of found steel. A selection will be available, but any that you already possess with an interesting story, texture, shape, etc. is fair game.
