Course Description

Learn to make artisan chains, clasps and the ever essential jump rings which hold your components together! Using steel, brass and copper wires you'll learn to craft beautiful clasps, earrings, pins and many unique types of chain. No soldering required!

Learn how to use hand tools and mandrels to shape, texture, cold-forge, rivet and wrap to connect your hand-made components. We'll also explore how to use wire rivets to create interesting links and components. All levels welcome, age 16 to adult.

All of the projects will be made using cold-connections, so no torch is required. Skills and projects will include:
- how to use basic hand tools
- how to wrap and cut jump rings
- how to drill holes into metal
- how to forge and form wire
- how to form earwires and clasps
- how to make a wire rivets to hold materials together
- how to make a bangle or ring using rivets
- how to create a pin back mechanism using cold connections

Please note: The format for Metals Online Classes will differ from that of a traditional in-studio class. Registered students will receive an invitation to join a Private Facebook Group, where they will have access to a pre-recorded demonstration of the lesson for each week. In this private group, students can ask questions and share photos/videos of their works in progress. We will meet as a class via Zoom for the 1.5-hour time listed in registration. Participation in scheduled class time is restricted to enrolled students only.

Once registered for the class, you will receive a more detailed tools/supplies list with suppliers/order numbers and any applicable discount codes. There is also the option to purchase a Materials Only Kit. Tools will not be provided.

Steel/Copper/Brass Wire (assorted gauges), 20g sterling wire, Wet/Dry Sandpaper (350-600 grit), Wood Sticks, Wax, Mini Rubberized Wheels & Mandrels, Dust Mask.

Jewelers Saw, Saw Blades, Bench Pin (see blog for options) , Domed Riveting Hammer, Steel Block or Small Anvl, Nail or Center Punch, 2 pair Serrated Long Nose Pliers, Step Pliers, and Keiba Wire Cutters, Tapered/Slotted Mandrel (aluminum ok/steel preferred), Tapered Wood Mandrel, Small Plastic, Rubber or Raw Hide Mallet, Set of Needle Files, Ring Clamp, Safety Glasses, Drill (this could be a Dremel w/adjustable collet or economy flex shaft), Insulated Cross-lock Tweezers, Drill Bit Assortment, 1/16" Drill Bits, Assort'd Wood Dowels, Steel Ruler with inch/mm, Masking Tape, Extra Fine Sharpie Marker, Pencil and Paper

Refund Policy

Student cancellations made at least 2 business days prior to the first class meeting are eligible for a full refund. All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via email to the Registration Office at wccregistration@worcester.edu.

Students registered in online learning multi-week classes, are permitted to cancel their registration after the first class meeting and will be eligible for a full refund of student tuition. All cancellation requests of this nature must be submitted before the second class meeting and must be made in writing via email to the Registration Office at wccregistration@worcester.edu.

No refunds or credits will be given for student absences nor for student cancellations made after the second class meeting begins. All materials and kits are non-returnable and non-refundable.

When course or workshop is cancelled by the WCC, a full refund will be issued.

To the extent authorized by law, I, individually and on behalf of my heirs, successors, assigns and personal representatives, hereby agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Board of Higher Education, WCC, WSU and their employees, agents, and representatives from all liability, loss, damage or expense, including attorneys' fees, that they or any of them incur or sustain as a result of any claims, demands, actions, causes of action, damages, judgments, costs or expenses (including attorneys' fees) which arise out of, occur during, or are in any way connected with my intentional or negligent conduct during my participation in the Activity, including traveling to and from an event related to this Activity.

5. I agree that this consent and release is to be construed under the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and that if any portion hereof is held invalid, the balance hereof shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.
