Course Description

In this 6-week online class, you'll learn how to choose the best torch for use in your home space or studio. We'll also discuss home studio safety. All of the projects included in this class can be completed with a simple butane torch. Skills and projects will include:

- how to set-up a safe workspace and studio safety
- how to pickle (clean) non-ferrous metals
- how to properly anneal non-ferrous metals
- how to make a simple ring band
- how to size and solder a bezel
- the basics of design
- how to clean and polish your finished work

Prerequisite: Intro to Jewelry 1 or Intro to Metals 1 or Department permission.

This online class is limited to 8 students.

Once registered for the class, you will receive a more detailed tools/supplies list with suppliers/order numbers and any applicable discount codes. There is also the option to purchase a Materials Only Kit. Tools will not be provided.

Please note: The format for Metals Online Classes will differ from that of a traditional in-studio class. Registered students will receive an invitation to join a Private Facebook Group, where they will have access to a pre-recorded demonstration of the lesson for each week. In this private group, students can ask questions and share photos/videos of their works in progress. We will meet as a class via Zoom for the 2-hour time listed in registration.

20g Copper & Brass Sheet, Copper/Brass Wire (assorted gauges), 20g sterling wire, 12g Sterling Wire, Sterling Pattern Wire, 22g Sterling Sheet, Fine Silver Bezel Wire, Silver Solder, Cabochon, Glue Stick, Wet/Dry Sandpaper (assortment), 3M 80g Radial Discs, Screw-on Mandrel, Wax, Dust Mask, wax stick, 1/4" dowel, shipped via Priority Mail.

Required Tools and supplies (Approx $90w/shipping):
Butane (or other) Torch, Fuel, Soldering Pad, Third Hand w/Insulated Cross-Lock Tweezers, Crosslock Tweezers, Soldering Pad, Flux, Flux Brush, Pickle Pot, Citric Acid, Copper or Plastic Tongs, Ring Clamp, Half-round Pliers, ½ Round Hand File, Steel Ruler with inch/mm.

You will also need the Required Tools & Supplies from Metalsmithing from Home:
Jewelers Saw, Saw Blade Assortment, Bench Pin w/Anvil (see blog) , Riveting Hammer, Nail or Center Punch, Jeweler's Chain Nose, Round Nose and Flat Nose Pliers, and Wire Cutters (available as a set), Tapered Mandrel (aluminum ok/steel preferred), Small Plastic, Rubber or Raw Hide Mallet, Set of Needle Files, Safety Glasses, Drill (this could be a Dremel w/adjustable collet or economy flex shaft), Drill Bit Assortment, 1/16" Drill Bits, Masking Tape, Pencil and Paper, Digital Calipers, 6"

Optional Tools and Supplies:
Dapping Set, Letter/Number Punches, Brass Mallet (or old claw hammer), Sharpie Marker, Cake/Baking Pan, Sand or Pumice, File Card (to clean files), High Speed Steel (HSS) Drill Bit Index, Bowed Face Chasing Hammer.

Refund Policy

Student cancellations made at least 2 business days prior to the first class meeting are eligible for a full refund. All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via email to the Registration Office at wccregistration@worcester.edu.

Students registered in online learning multi-week classes, are permitted to cancel their registration after the first class meeting and will be eligible for a full refund of student tuition. All cancellation requests of this nature must be submitted before the second class meeting and must be made in writing via email to the Registration Office at wccregistration@worcester.edu.

No refunds or credits will be given for student absences nor for student cancellations made after the second class meeting begins. All materials and kits are non-returnable and non-refundable.

When course or workshop is cancelled by the WCC, a full refund will be issued.

By submitting your registration for this course ("Activity"), you acknowledge that all registered parties are 18 years or older and legally competent to make this agreement. To agree that the activity is entirely voluntary and to be fully aware that participation involves risk of injury and/or property damage including the possibility of short-term or long-term disability and even death; to agree that these risks can come from many varied causes and that many of these risks are not foreseeable; to acknowledge, accept, and assume all such risks.

3. I, individually and on behalf of my heirs, successors, assigns and personal representatives, hereby agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Board of Higher Education, WCC, WSU and their employees, agents, and representatives from all liability for any damages, losses, or injuries (including death) I sustain to my person or property or both, including but not limited to any claims, demands, actions, causes of action, judgments, expenses and costs (including attorneys' fees) which arise out of, result from, occur during, or are connected in any manner with my intentional or negligent conduct during my participation in the Activity, including traveling to and from an event related to this Activity.

4. To the extent authorized by law, I, individually and on behalf of my heirs, successors, assigns and personal representatives, hereby agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Board of Higher Education, WCC, WSU and their employees, agents, and representatives from all liability, loss, damage or expense, including attorneys' fees, that they or any of them incur or sustain as a result of any claims, demands, actions, causes of action, damages, judgments, costs or expenses (including attorneys' fees) which arise out of, occur during, or are in any way connected with my intentional or negligent conduct during my participation in the Activity, including traveling to and from an event related to this Activity.

5. I agree that this consent and release is to be construed under the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and that if any portion hereof is held invalid, the balance hereof shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.
