Leveraging the resources of online and in person learning, you will make work from the comfort of your home studio or Open Studio Sessions at the Center, as you learn about and make work for a Soda Firing. Students will learn glazing and decoration techniques for Soda Firing, along with kiln loading and firing practices. Soda Firing, a contemporary version of Salt or Atmospheric firing, yields interesting and unique effects on glazed and unglazed surfaces by introducing Soda Ash into the kiln during the later portion of the firing.
Online meetings via Zoom will feature lectures on the clay bodies, slips and glazes that can work with this unique atmospheric firing format. Students will be encouraged to work from home, or to enroll in Open Studio Sessions, over the course of this hybrid workshop. The calendar will support time for the making and bisque firing of work, culminating with an in person class on Thursday March 27th, (v.2.0), leading upto a workday in the studio for final glazing and the loading the work into the Soda Kiln for firing the next day.
